Reserve Clarke County Sheriff Deputy Robert Goodwin was
killed at 9:30 a.m. on Highway 512 west of Quitman
Goodwin was overseeing inmates who were picking up trash
when he was struck by a pickup truck. At the time of the
accident, Goodwin was loading trash bags onto the back of a
police vehicle.
Goodwin had retired from Burlington and since 1992 had
worked part time as a reserve deputy for Clarke County and
was currently also working as a part-time police officer for
the town of Enterprise.
The department's inmate trash pickup initiative just began
this week and this was only Goodwin's second day on the job.
"He loved law enforcement. He loved people. He loved this
county. He loved this community. Robert was a fine man and
he will surely be missed.
The sheriff said charges are not expected to be filed in the
case. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is handling the
investigation.
