Joplin police officer died of burns
suffered last month in a natural gas explosion that
occurred as he was investigating a possible suicide threat. Timothy
Nielson, 26, died Monday night
at St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield. Nielson and
fellow officer Greg Batson, 36, were hurt Aug. 10 in the explosion at
the home of David Riley, 41, who died the following night. Batson,
released from the hospital last month, is getting physical therapy and
doing well. Riley and his estranged wife had signed final divorce papers
the day before the explosion, and the next day he called the office of
the attorney who represented her. The attorney was in court, and when
the woman who answered offered to take a message, Riley said it would be
"too late." The woman, believing it was obvious Riley was going to harm
himself, called 911, and Nielson and Batson arrived at the home four
minutes later. Investigators said a natural gas line in the home was
open and that gas had spread throughout the building.
Nielson, a Joplin officer for four years, is survived by his
wife, Tracy, and two daughters.

Its very sad to read of officers who have lost their lives on/off the
job. We put our lives on the line daily to serve our cities/counties and
go months without receiving a mere thank you from our commanders and so

a great job." We need it. I pray for the families and your loss. Safety

I visited this site by accident, but as an ex soldier I believe that
any man who falls genuinely doing his duty should be remembered, the
military are, so should the emergency services (as we call them in the
UK) to this man (or woman), and all others who fall in the line of duty
I bid Bon Voyage, and to those to whom he or she was important I wish
strength and courage, and for those who deliberately caused his or her
demise I wish the lower depths of their personal hell.

All those who have served and given their lives are a rare breed.
Every day that they report for duty and turn the key and roll out, they
know in their hearts it may be the last time. But they go anyway,
because that is who they are. To the dear families and Friends my heart
goes out to you. There is no doubt that they are still on patrol and
still watching over their families and friends from on high. Chaplain
