Beaumont police officer was killed and a sheriff's deputy swam to safety when
their helicopter crashed into Sabine Lake. The helicopter crashed as
the officers checked out reports of a fire that turned out to be a
trash fire, Deputy Jeremy Battenfield survived. The crew last made
contact shortly after 10:30 p.m. A helicopter search crew spotted
the wreckage at 2 a.m. Thursday in about 6 feet of water.
It was 5.2 miles east of the Rainbow Bridge. Deputy
Battenfield was found alive and was spotted swimming in the
lake and was taken to Mid Jefferson Hospital, where he was treated
and released.
Lane was a 32-year veteran of the department.
He is survived by his wife, Renee, and his 13 year
old son, Ben.
