Officer James Davis, 31, was pronounced dead at 11:08 a.m. from a single gunshot wound to the head. The officer's weapon is missing and believed taken by the suspect as Kahdir Al Khattab. Police set up a perimeter from 46th Street to 49th Street between  Sunset and Boulevard as they search for the suspect, Police dispatchers reported as an armed black male who fled the scene of the shooting on foot. At 11 a.m., a team of Indianapolis Police and Marion County Sheriff's deputies were going through garages on Cornelius Ave. north of 47th Street. Police say the officer had been investigating a suspicious person report around the time of the shooting. Davis was seen talking to a man outside the field house. Officer Davis had called in a request for information regarding Williams moments before the incident. A witness reports seeing the man who had been talking to Davis bend down and pick up a gun as the officer was laying on the ground. The suspect was apprehended a few hours later, not far from the scene of the shooting, after being shot and killed by police. Officer Davis had served with the Butler University Police Department for just under 2 years.

Davis is survived by his wife and three children, ages 8, 3 and 21 months

Students, faculty and friends gathered around Officer Davis' car, covered in flowers and signs, to pay their final respects after the funeral procession passed through the Butler campus Thursday afternoon.

The funeral procession heads into Crown Hill, led by Indianapolis Police Lt. Paul Ciesielski, a bagpipe band, color guard, mounted patrol officers and honor guard. Davis was laid to rest Thursday in the Heroes of Public Safety section.
