Assistant chief of police
Bill Linder was killed while trying to arrest a burglary suspect, Chief Bill Linder,
a veteran police officer, was responding to a burglary about 10 a.m. when he was shot during a fight with
the burglary suspect, Ray Bingham 43, of Wisner, was accused of shooting Linder several times with the officer's own weapon. Bingham is being held at the Richland Parish Detention Center. Linder called for backup help from sheriff's deputies, and when they arrived they found Bingham threatening them with a hammer. A knife and box cutter also were found on the scene. Linder was transported to the Franklin Parish Medical Center, where he died shortly afterward. Bingham had been a problem in the past for Franklin sheriff's deputies, but they did not elaborate, it was uncertain if Bingham had a weapon when Linder arrived on the scene.

Assistant Chief Linder had served with the 4-person Wisner Police Department for 3 years and had previously served with the Baskin Police Department for approximately 6 years.
He is survived by his wife and two sons.
