Chambers County Sheriff's Deputy Dirk Knearem was fatally
injured while responding to an
accident on Texas 73 near Hwy.124 Junction at approximately 8:00
p.m.
when his patrol car was hit by
another vehicle at an intersection.
Knearem
was trying to make a left turn onto State Highway 73 just outside of
Winnie on Sunday evening when his patrol car was struck by a vehicle
heading east. Port Arthur resident Jimmie Lewis, who was driving a Crown
Victoria, was also injured in the accident and taken to Winnie Community
Hospital.
Knearem was taken to a hospital in
Winnie, about 25 miles southwest of Beaumont, where he was
pronounced dead. Lewis, from Port Arthur, was treated at the
hospital for minor injuries
and released.
Deputy Knearem, 40, of Mount Belvieu, TX had been a peace officer
since 1988. He has been employed with the Chambers County Sheriff's
Office since October 2002. He was also responsible for organizing
the Bicycle Patrol.
He was unmarried and had no children.
