Sixty-seven-year-old sheriff's Lieutenant Robert Haley and an inmate he was transferring from Abilene to the Comanche County Jail died in a car wreck. The Texas Department of Public Safety says Haley was driving east on State Highway 36 near Cross Plains when his car veered onto the shoulder. He overcorrected and his car veered into the opposing lane, where it was hit by an SUV. Haley and his prisoner were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV, 53-year-old David Ballew, was treated at a nearby hospital and later released.
