Special Agent John Balchunas died as a result of injuries he
sustained when he was shot while on duty
in Milwaukee on October 29, 2004. The shooting occurred at 12:05
in the morning of October 29, 2004,
at a gas station at 37th Street and Villard Avenue in the City of
Milwaukee, during an apparent robbery attempt. Special Agent
Balchunas was conveyed to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee.
He was born on January 18, 1970. He was assigned to the
Milwaukee Office of the Division of Criminal Investigation. Jay
was originally hired by DOJ in October of 1999, and appointed to DCI's
Narcotics Bureau Milwaukee Regional Office. Prior to his service
at DOJ, he served as a police officer with the Milwaukee Police
Department, from 1992 to 1999.
Jay attended Marquette University
in Milwaukee from 1988-1995, obtaining a B.A. in Criminology.
Since 1988 he also served as a member of the New
Berlin Volunteer Fire Department, most recently as Fire
Lieutenant. He was a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
and a Hazardous Materials Technician (HMT).
Reward offered
The Milwaukee Police
Department is seeking any information regarding the shooting of
special agent John "Jay" Balchunas. The FBI, Dean Foods and
the Wisconsin Department of Justice are offering $30,000 in reward
