21-year-old Brandon man with a
history of speeding citations ran a red light as he sped off the
Crosstown Expressway into downtown Tampa, ramming a federal
agent's unmarked car into an oncoming bus filled with cruise-bound
tourists. The U.S. Secret Service agent, 30-year-old Phillip Lebid
of Tampa, died
instantly. Lebid, a former Fort Myers police officer, joined the
agency just 10 months ago and was the youngest member of the
Secret Service's 15-member office in Tampa. The crash happened
shortly before 2:30 p.m. at Morgan and Brorein streets. The tour
bus was headed south on Morgan and had stopped for a red light at
the intersection. Lebid was headed north in his dark blue Mercury
Grand Marquis and also had stopped for the light. The light turned
green, and as the two vehicles drove through the intersection,
Christian Lee Anderson sped west off the ramp from the Crosstown
in his maroon 1998 Ford Mustang, running a red light and smashing
into the passenger's side of Lebid's Marquis.
The Marquis then slammed into
the bus, and the driver's side of the Marquis collapsed into the
front of
the bus. Lebid's trunk flew open. The contents - flashing blue
emergency light, spotlight, fire extinguisher, a street map of
Tampa and Hillsborough County - spilled out onto the asphalt.
Fire rescue workers used heavy
tools to remove the crumpled driver's-side door.
Anderson, 21, of 1927 Red Bridge
Drive in Brandon is in fair condition at Tampa General Hospital,
As of Monday night, police had not cited Anderson in the crash.
Anderson's driving record
includes three suspensions since last year for failing to pay a
fine; four
speeding tickets since 2000 through this year; and one ticket last
year for failing to stop at a stop sign, according to the Florida
Department of Motor Vehicles. The speeding violations include
driving 51 mph
in a 25-mph zone; 92 mph in a 65-mph zone; 70 mph in a 50-mph
zone; and 64 in a 55-mph zone.
