Police
officer William Rivera, 35, who fell from a roof last month while
chasing a suspect has died.
Rivera had responded to a burglar alarm that went off Oct. 2 on
3rd Street in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn. When he and a
partner arrived, they saw a man running up to the building's roof.
The two officers followed, and while searching the rooftop Rivera
slipped and fell about 20 feet to the ground. He broke both legs
and injured his back, and was taken to Lutheran Medical Center for
treatment. He underwent several surgeries, including a procedure
to rebuild his heel. After being released from the hospital,
Rivera went on sick leave and continued to recuperate at home. He
suffered a seizure early Wednesday and was taken to Wyckoff
Heights Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:25 a.m.
Rivera joined the NYPD in 1992.
Rivera had a 7-year-old
daughter and was engaged to be married to another officer.
