The officer wounded one of the suspects, 26 year old Richard Whitaker who was also taken for treatment to the hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. The man and a second suspect 18 year old Nolan Chauvin IV were both caught after an intense manhunt. the officer was one of about seven Police Department employees in Pendergrass, a
2-square-mile city with 480 residents located about 60 miles northeast of Atlanta in Jackson County.

The incident began sometime after 8 p.m. when Ruse, who was on patrol, attempted to stop the white pickup truck on Ga. 129 in Jackson County. During the pursuit, the suspects lost control of the vehicle, which went off the road near the intersection of U.S. 129 and Pond Fork Road and flipped over. As the officer approached theScene vehicle, the suspects allegedly fired at the officer, striking him in
the head and chest area. The officer returned fire but both
suspects fled from the scene.

Troopers from the Georgia State Patrol's Athens and Gainesville posts also responded to the incident.
The State Patrol called in its aviation unit to help in a manhunt for the two suspects, who were also tracked with police dogs. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was investigating the shooting, and the patrol was investigating the crash.
Both men are charged with felony murder and aggravated assault and are being held in the Jackson County jail.

This is so tragic, and my heart breaks for his family, friends and loved ones who will forever have to live with the grief. For a couple of worthless punks to do this....to a man who loved life, it just boggles my mind. I pray for his family, and may they find a measure of comfort in their faith, and from the
camaraderie and support from the brotherhood of the blue. I also pray that the judge sentence those
perps to so that they will never again see the light of day.
