Newington police officer
Peter Lavery was shot and killed after responding to a domestic violence report.
The man who allegedly wounded and held the officer hostage later killed himself. Officer Peter Lavery
was shot
and held hostage around 10:30 Thursday night as he responded to a
domestic dispute call at 52 Mountain View Drive. Officer Lavery was
multiple times" chest, legs and groin with an assault rifle and died of his wounds and the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Lavery was shot and held hostage by a former correction officer, who was heavily armed, in the basement of the house. It appears, from what the officers were able to determine, once they were able to get into the first floor of the house and based on their observations that the officer was dead early in the course of events. A state police tactical team was on the first floor of a home, where the hostage-taker and the injured officer were holed up in the basement.

Lavery was a veteran of the Connecticut National Guard. He had served with the Newington Police Department for 17 years and had previously served 5 years with the Berlin Police Department. He is
survived by his wife, son, daughter, two sisters, and two brothers, both of whom are retired Newington
police officer.
