Detective Weir died on 11-07-2004 to a stab wound received 14 years ago. At 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 23, 1990, Officer John Weir’s life and that of his family was changed forever. Officer Weir was sent on a call of a diagnosed Paranoid Schizophrenic who was threatening to set himself and his parent’s home on fire. Officer Weir had dealt with this mentally ill subject on a number of occasions. On this morning in question, after lengthy deliberation, Officer Weir approached the mentally ill subject who came lurching around the corner of the basement with a fillet knife. The last thing that Officer John Weir ever saw was a jagged 10 inch blade. The knife entered Officer Weir’s skull at the corner of his right eye, tore across the bridge of his nose and dug deeply behind his left eye, deep into his brain. He remained in a coma for several months. After coming out of the coma, Detective Weir remained partially paralyzed, brain damaged and blind until his death.

Detective Weir had served with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department for 19 years.
He is survived by his wife and two children.
