Police officer Bryan Hurst died after being shot during an apparent
bank robbery. The shooting took place at about 10:45 a.m. at
Fifth-Third Bank, located at the 6200 block of East Broad Street,
near

McNaughten Road. Columbus police said Officer was working
special duty inside the bank when a man in a ski mask tried to rob
it. Columbus police said the robber used a "takeover" style of
holdup and purposely got into a shootout with the officer. The man
shot Hurst, 33, with a chrome, semiautomatic firearm. Hurst might
have returned fire and hit the robber. "The officer, through his
actions, saved the lives of many people inside the bank by returning
gunfire and preventing anyone else from inside the bank from being
injured," Hurst, an eight-year veteran, was transported to Grant
Medical Center, where he died. The robber then fled the bank on foot
and went south on McNaughten Road. Officers are searching the area,
especially the McNaughten Commons apartments. The robber was
described as black, in his 20s, and 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet tall.
He was wearing an oversized dark jacket with one red sleeve. He is
considered to be armed and dangerous.
