Airport Police
in a crash in the city of Romulus.
Around 10 a.m., state troopers were
called to I-94 near Wayne Road where a red four-door was sitting
next to a light pole. The passenger and driver had to be taken out
of the car with the Jaws of Life. Both were taken to St. Joseph
Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti, where the driver is still in critical
condition. Michael Scarbrough, 42,
of Southgate died from injuries in the crash. Both were on duty
sergeants with the airport authority police department.
The department
car they were driving crashed in the median
 of I-94 near Wayne Rd. The car slid on icy roads and slammed into a
utility pole. A Metro Airport
spokesperson said that the two individuals were long time airport
police officers. They were in a work vehicle, traveling in the
westbound lanes of I-94. the driver lost control
of the vehicle due to the wet and icy road conditions. According to
sources, authorities had to
remove the roof of the wrecked vehicle in order to get the passenger
out. the driver suffered massive injuries, although the driver was
talking to rescuers. The airport spokesperson said that the officers
do occasionally leave airport grounds to take care of things, such
as court issues. But he also stated that nothing this serious has
ever happened to on duty officers in the past.
