Deputy Blake Gammill and several other members of the
department’s special emergency response team went to the home on
Highway 5, just south of Interstate 20, about 10:30 p.m. to
serve an arrest warrant on 44-year-old Jimmy Bilbo a former Douglas
County Sheriff’s Deputy on charges for child
molestation. He was currently on bond stemming for a 2004
arrest on child molestation.
Surveillance video obtained by
Arbor Place Mall earlier showed him following a teenage boy out of
the mall into the parking lot and into Bilbo’s truck. The footage is
what led to deputies serving an arrest warrant against Bilbo for
aggravated stalking and violating the conditions of his bond. The officers made sure to wear protective gear and
heavily arm themselves before raiding to the home because they knew
there were firearms at the house and that Bilbo’s stepfather, who
lived
there, was angry about Bilbo being arrested on molestation charges
last year.
Using a battering ram, the team entered the home and
attempted to serve the warrant when Bilbo’s stepfather, Gerald
Green, came out of a backroom armed with a gun and started firing. A
bullet struck Gammill in his face, the deputy
had on his protective gear, including his helmet, but the bullet
went just under his Kevlar helmet. The Douglas County officers
returned fire, killing Green, who was in his 60’s, Bilbo escaped
harm and was taken into custody. He remains in the Douglas County jail
and is expected to stand Charges.
Paramedics airlifted Deputy Gammill to Atlanta Medical Center,
where he was pronounced dead. Deputy Gammill had served with the Douglas
County Sheriff's
Office for 8 years. He is survived by his Mother, Father X-wife and
two children.
Deputy Gimmill was set to be married in April this year, 2005

Where do I start? I knew Blake in school. It was very hard for me to
go to the funeral home and see him, but I did. I would like to say
thank you to Blake. I have now decided to turn my life around and walk
closer to the Lord. It took a tragedy to make me want to do this.
Blake, may God be with you. There has been so much support in the
community and all over. I can't wait to shake your hand in Heaven and
say thank you for what you did for us and what you did for me. Thank
you.
