Officer Eric Jay Van Fossan responded to a family violence call,
and, along with other officers, struggled with a suspect and had to
pepper spray him. After the suspect was subdued and handcuffed,
Officer Van Fossan stepped back and fell, suffering a massive heart
attack. Officers at the scene administered CPR until the EMS arrived
and took over. officer Van Fossan was transported to the ER and
passed away.
Van Fossan was 38 years old and
was with the department one year.
He is survived by his wife Edna Dolores Martinez Van Fossan (also a
reserve officer with our agency) and three children: Alejandro
Javier, 6; Patrick Tomas, 4, and Austin Nicole, 1 and-a-half years.

As a retired Firefighter Paramedic I consider all Law Enforcement
officers to be my brothers and sisters. My prayers go out to the
