A Lawrence police officer Craig S. Herbert was killed when his patrol car was struck by a minivan pursued by police along Franklin Road, near 46th Street, as the officer awaited for the approaching minivan. The minivan with multiple occupants went out of control at an estimated 100 mph on railroad tracks as it was eastbound on 46th Street. The minivan smashed into the parked patrol car killing officer Hebert. The suspect fled the scene on foot but was apprehended a short time later.

The chase started around 11:30 p.m. in the 4800 block of Shadeland 34 Avenue, then proceeded south to 46th Street and east toward Franklin Road. The minivan was reported stolen, and after the crash, the occupants fled.
