Sgt. Kevin Kight, 34, was shot twice during a traffic stop along a
busy street lined with beachfront hotels and condominiums crowded
with spring break visitors. He died on the way to a hospital. Kight
stopped a vehicle, checked the persons driver's license at an
intersection near the Holiday Inn Sunspree, which is popular among
spring break visitors. The officer discovered the license was
invalid but when he attempted to make an arrest the driver
identified as Robert J. Bailey 22, of Milwaukee, pulled out a
handgun and shot him. A man had left Bailey's car before the
shooting began. Police found him and an associate early Monday at a
motel several miles west of the shooting scene. A Bay County
sheriff's deputy then spotted Bailey on foot near that motel and
arrested him.
Kight was married and the father of a 4-year-old son. He had worked
for the Panama City Beach Police Department for six years and had
prior law enforcement experience in Ohio.

It has been one year since we lost Kevin in the line of duty. Thank you to all who supported us this past year. A memorial marker was placed today at the site where Kevin gave his life for his community. His family and friends were all there. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

It is abundantly clear that ALL of your fallen officers shared a
common thread - they were of the highest caliber yet modest and
unassuming in the approach of their duties. I believe that for as long
as such
men and women patrol your streets with such commitment and
professionalism, then you have much to be proud of. My heart goes out
to all the bereaved families, but be assured, there is someone in
"every" corner of the world who cares!

First Baptist Church of Fairborn, Ohio is mourning the death of Kevin.
His wife, Christie, grew up in our church. And his mother and
father-in-law, Faye and Bob Kesner, are still faithful members. We all
said prayers for them tonight and our hearts are broken over such a
tragic and senseless death inflicted on Kevin and his family.
