Officer Police Officer Steven Zorkus was killed when the officer apparently lost control of his squad car. The crash happened in the 8800 block of Golf Road around 4 a.m. when an  The vehicle smash into the sign for the Highland Towers condominium complex, flipped and hit a parked car. The squad car came to rest on its side, and the sign's large metal support pole was left bent at a severe angle.

Zourkas, a five-year veteran of the Niles Police Department, was responding to a disturbance call on Golf Road around 4 a.m. when the crash happened. "When he lost control of the car, went up a curb on the south side of Golf Road, struck two curbs and the squad car ended up on its side. At least four other vehicles suffered extreme damage in the crash.

Zourkas is survived by a wife and two children -- a 2-month-old boy and a 7-year-old stepson.
