a heart attack, a 27-year veteran of the St. Charles Police
Department found dead Saturday morning following a foot chase. Sgt.
Daniel P. Figgins was one of the officers who responded to a report
of suspicious activity at St. Charles East High School at about 1:20
a.m. Saturday. Police say upon arriving at the scene, Figgins told
dispatch he was involved in a foot chase. That was the last
dispatchers heard from the 53-year-old sergeant.
When other officer got to the scene, they found Figgins face down
and unresponsive. He went to a nearby hospital, where attempts to
revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at Delnor
Community Hospital in Geneva. As for the alleged trouble he was
tracking, officers later arrested five teenagers who they say
attempted to burglarize a sports center at the high school.
Sergeant Figgins had served with the St. Charles Police Department
for 27 years and is survived by his wife and two daughters.

It is abundantly clear that ALL of your fallen officers shared a
common thread - they were of the highest caliber yet modest and
unassuming in the approach of their duties. I believe that for as long
as such
men and women patrol your streets with such commitment and
professionalism, then you have much to be proud of. My heart goes out
to all the bereaved families, but be assured, there is someone in
"every" corner of the world who cares!
