---UPDATES BELOW---
At approximately
8:30 a.m. on Friday, March 12, 2004, Officer Jason Scott was
shot four times with a high-powered rifle as he exited his
patrol car at the scene of a domestic disturbance. A backup
officer arrived seconds later and discovered that Officer
Scott had been fired upon and was down. The officer attempted
to approach Officer Scott, but came under heavy fire and was
forced to retreat down the driveway of the residence, where he
met a second backup officer. Both officers continued to come
under heavy fire and had to retreat further from the scene
until additional backup could arrive. Officer Scott was later
transported to UT Medical Center by helicopter, where he was
pronounced dead.
Approximately 150 officers from surrounding counties and
agencies responded to the scene. Officers attempted to
approach the residence and were fired upon. Four officers were
wounded by shrapnel and treated at the scene, where they
remained. These shots, at approximately 12 pm, were the last
shots fired by the suspect and the last contact that was had
with the suspect. The suspect refused to answer either his
cell phone or the landline phone in his residence. Attempts
were made to address the suspect over a public address system,
but these were also unsuccessful. Tear gas was also deployed
into the residence, but had no visible effect. He was
believed to have been armed with a SKS and a shotgun. The
suspect allegedly also had access to other weapons and a store
of ammunition.
On May
13th, 2004, at approximately 12:30 pm, officers
entered the Harvey residence through the garage with K-9
units, utilizing cameras and mirrors to clear each room in the
home. Officers discovered the suspect, Michael Harvey, dead
in an upstairs bedroom. Preliminary investigation indicates
that his death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot
wound to the head that is estimated to have been inflicted
within the past eighteen to twenty hours.
Officer Scott was a Loudon County native, and is the first
Loudon County Sheriff’s Deputy to be killed in the line of
duty. He was 24 years old and a 3 year veteran of the
force. His wife is expected to deliver the couple’s first
child at any time. He is survived by his expectant wife,
mother, father, and sister.
A trust fund has been established for Officer Scott’s family.

Our heart is with you in this time of Mourning. As long as memory
lasts he is not lost, just Home. We appreciate his dedication to his
duty and his sacrifice in the line of duty. When one good man falls
we all must more his passing, or we are nothing more than rough
beasts. God comfort you, God hold you in His arms and strengthen
you. Sgt Douglas Yakel and family, Woonsocket, RI

Truly tragic when a young officer has to be taken from the thin and
fragile line that he walks. I read of some of the accomplishments of
this young deputy and said to myself this was a person that loved
what he did and took the job to heart to make a community a better
place. I wish the department and family well in the road ahead and
remember him for what he accomplished in his short life.
