Auto Accident

Richland County sheriff’s deputy Byron Cannon was killed in a fiery, three-vehicle crash on I-20 at the start of rush hour. Byron “Keith” Cannon, 24, of Irmo died in the crash. Two others were taken to Lexington Medical Center. The deputy’s patrol car and a Volkswagen Jetta caught fire after the 4:15 p.m. wreck near U.S. 378. Both cars sustained heavy fire damage. Cannon, who was engaged to be married, was traveling westbound on I-20 behind another sheriff's deputy. Both cars, which had their blue lights on but no sirens, were following a dump truck. The deputies were trying to identify the driver and tag number of the vehicle after a suspect in an assault case reportedly fled in the dump truck.

For an unknown reason, Cannon crossed the median at the 62 mile marker, knocked down a barrier stake and went over the wires. The patrol car collided almost head-on with an Infiniti SUV traveling east on I-20. A Volkswagen Jetta then slammed into those two vehicles. The collision with the Jetta apparently caused the deputy's car to burst into flames. One person in the Jetta and another inside the Infiniti were injured.

Cannon leaves behind his mother and fiancé.

The easiest way for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing....Edmund Burke. There are people who think that we do the job to be heroes, or for personal gain. They could never understand that it is about the person next to you.

It is abundantly clear that ALL of your fallen officers shared a common thread - they were of the highest caliber yet modest and unassuming in the approach of their duties. I believe that for as long as such
men and women patrol your streets with such commitment and professionalism, then you have much to be proud of. My heart goes out to all the bereaved families, but be assured, there is someone in "every" corner of the world who cares!

May your family find peace and strength.  I know how it feels to lose a family member in the line of duty.  My prayers are with you.  They will be blessed for all that they did for us while they were here and now they can all watch over us.
