Sergeant Gerald Vick
St. Paul Police Department, Minnesota

End of Watch: May 6, 2005

Age:
41
Badge Number:
Years on The Job:
16
Cause of Death:
Shot and killed

St. Paul Sergeant Gerald Vick was shot multiple times at 2:22 a.m. in the 900 block of Reaney Avenue in St. Paul, near Erick’s Bar. He was taken to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said Vick was working undercover, with a second officer, Sgt. Joe Strong, when they came across two people in an alley. That’s when Vick was shot several times by at least one of the suspects.
Strong returned the gunfire, but it is unknown if either suspect was hit by that gunfire. Other people said they heard 10 to 12 shots. Police are searching an area on the eastside of St. Paul for two armed black males. The first suspect is described as 25-30 years old, about 5 feet 7 inches in height. He has very short hair and was seen wearing a white shirt with black sleeves and black pants with a stripe down the side. The second suspect is also 25-30 years old, about 6 feet tall and 160-170 pounds. He has short hair, a light colored shirt with a white T-shirt underneath and blue jeans.

A triangular area bordered by 7th Street, Interstate 94, Arcade and Earl Streets is closed while police search for the suspects. The closed area covers about one and a half miles. Police believe the suspects fled the area on foot after the shooting.

Sergeant Vick had served with the agency for 16 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.

The easiest way for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing....Edmund Burke. There are people who think that we do the job to be heroes, or for personal gain. They could never understand that it is about the person next to you.

It is abundantly clear that ALL of your fallen officers shared a common thread - they were of the highest caliber yet modest and unassuming in the approach of their duties. I believe that for as long as such
men and women patrol your streets with such commitment and professionalism, then you have much to be proud of. My heart goes out to all the bereaved families, but be assured, there is someone in "every" corner of the world who cares!
