Denver police officer
was shot and killed working in an off-duty capacity. The incident
happened at about 1 a.m. at 1733 W. Mississippi at a hall that is
rented out for private functions called Solano Ocampo. According to
police, Young and another officer who was also working off-duty were
monitoring a crowd of people when the suspect fired at them from
behind. Neither officer was able to
return fire, and two other officer nearby ran to the scene and saw a
male suspect fleeing the area armed with what appeared to be a
weapon. The suspect disappeared into the crowd, and the two officers
ran to help the two injured men. Both Young and the other injured
officer, John H. Bishop, were hospitalized. Young died soon after.
Police said Bishop was saved possibly because he was wearing a
bulletproof vest. Police described the suspect as being Hispanic
with very short hair, a thin moustache, "lightly heavy set wearing
white shirt with sleeves down to the elbows and either Kaki or light
brown pants," between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-10 and "possibly in his
mid 20s."

Young is survived by his wife and two young daughters. Detective
Young graduated from the police
academy in December of 1993 and was
later assigned to District 4. He had also been assigned to the
Vice/Narcotics Unit in 1997 and the Domestic Violence Unit and was
currently assigned to Fugitive/Bomb Unit Vice/Narcotics."
Detective Young was the recipient of the Medal of Honor Award,
Distinguished Service Cross Award, 10
Official Commendations, and 2
Commendatory Letters. Detective Young was very athletic; he boxed,
played competitive softball and was an avid motorcycle rider. He
adored his daughters and loved every moment he spent with them.
Kelly Young and all the family would like to express their sincere
appreciation for all the love, kindness and support they have been
shown by everyone. It has deeply touched them and for that they are
thankful

The easiest way for evil to triumph, is for good men to do
nothing....Edmund Burke. There are people who think that we do the
job to be heroes, or for personal gain. They could never understand
that it is about the person next to you.

It is abundantly clear that ALL of your fallen officers shared a
common thread - they were of the highest caliber yet modest and
unassuming in the approach of their duties. I believe that for as long
as such
men and women patrol your streets with such commitment and
professionalism, then you have much to be proud of. My heart goes out
to all the bereaved families, but be assured, there is someone in
"every" corner of the world who cares!
