Deputy Sheriff Jerry Ortiz
Los Angeles County Sheriff Dept, California

End of Watch: June 24, 2005
Age:
35
Badge Number:
Years on The Job:
15
Cause of Death:
Shot and Killed

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy Ortiz was shot and killed while answering a 911 call
and interviewing a woman and a man outside a Hawaiian Gardens apartments complex south of Los Angeles, when 27 year old Jose Luis Orozco burst out of the residence, put a handgun to the officer's face and fired. Ortiz was a 15-year veteran of the sheriff's department and a member of the department's gang enforcement unit.

Ortiz answered the 911 call from a woman at the apartment by himself, rather than wait for his partner to respond with him. Deputy Ortiz did not have a chance. When the door opened, he started speaking to the woman, and immediately
Jose Luis Orozco came out of nowhere and shot him.

Ortiz, who was the father of two sons age 16 and 6, had recently married.

I met Jerry back in high school. As I left El Monte for the Military, Jerry entered into law enforcement. I have always known Jerry to be a person with kind words for just about everyone he met. Jerry always offered a helping hand. I am in the middle east still serving in the military and sorry I could not be there to pay my respect to the Ortiz Family. Jerry will be missed by all that knew him.

I reflect, and remember:
All gave some
And some gave all
Some stood through
For the red, white and blue
And some had to fall
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties
And recall Some gave all. (unknown writer)

The easiest way for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing....Edmund Burke. There are people who think that we do the job to be heroes, or for personal gain. They could never understand that it is about the person next to you.

It is abundantly clear that ALL of your fallen officers shared a common thread - they were of the highest caliber yet modest and unassuming in the approach of their duties. I believe that for as long as such
men and women patrol your streets with such commitment and professionalism, then you have much to be proud of. My heart goes out to all the bereaved families, but be assured, there is someone in "every" corner of the world who cares!
