Lt. James Weaver, 59, a Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Deputy died last
night shortly before 7 p.m. at VCU Medical Center Hospital in
Richmond. He had been shot in an earlier confrontation with a
juvenile he was transporting through Petersburg. Police said the
incident began around 1:30 p.m. when Lt. Weaver was transporting a
15 year-old, who somehow overpowered the deputy. A confrontation
ensued and the deputy was shot multiple times with his own gun. The
juvenile then escaped. Numerous jurisdictions responded to the scene
and assisted. The deputy was air lifted to the hospital.
State Police provided a Tactical Team, K-9 Units, a search
helicopter and additional manpower. The youth was discovered at
Crater Square Apartment Complex on South Crater Road in Petersburg
where he was taken into custody.

Thank you Uncle James (Lt James Weaver) for being the coolest Uncle
a niece could ever have. From giving military advice, to being the
best fish fryer at my baby's 1st B-Day cookout, you will be sorely
missed. I pray and wish you only knew how important you were to me
and the whole Thompson family.
