Sgt. William McEntee was as routine a call as police get this time of year - someone was shooting fireworks the day after the Fourth of July. But when the 43-year-old father of three went to investigate around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, he was ambushed, by a gunman, identified by police as 19-year-old Kevin Johnson, shot the officer in the head. He died a few hours later.

McEntee, alone in his squad car, found a 13-year-old boy and was talking to him about shooting fireworks. With the officer still seated in his car, Johnson approached and fired several shots, striking the officer in the head. The squad car sped down the street, struck a parked car, then hit a tree. Keller said Johnson walked up, fired several more shots into the car, then stole the officer's service revolver. It wasn't clear if the officer tried to escape or if the car lurched forward on its own. The 13-year-old boy was shot in the leg, but Keller said his injuries were not life-threatening.

McEntee is survived by his wife, Mary and three children ages 7, 10 and 13. McEntee had been with the department since 1986 and was the first police officer to be fatally shot in modern times in Kirkwood.
