was shot and killed overnight by a sheriff's deputy
chasing a
suspect in northeast Harris County. Nehemiah Pickens, 33, was
apparently a case of mistaken identity: The constable's deputy, who
was working an extra job providing security at an apartment complex,
may have been trying to help catch the suspect. Authorities said
he was running with a gun drawn but was wearing blue jeans and a
dark shirt rather than a uniform. The tragedy played out just after
midnight at the apartment complex near Mesa and Tidwell. That's
where a chase led a Harris County Sheriff's Department deputy who
attempted to pull over a driver for making an illegal turn nearby.
The chase ended when the suspect's
car rammed a fence at the apartment complex, and the driver got out
and fled on foot. The sheriff's deputy was pursuing that suspect
when he saw another man running while holding a gun. The sheriff's
deputy opened fire when the armed man reportedly disregarded orders
to stop and drop his weapon. Several of the sheriff's deputy's shots
hit the other armed man, who turned out to be Pickens, a Precinct 6
Constable's reserve deputy, He died from his wounds.
Pickens was married with three children.

I reflect, and remember:
All gave some
And some gave all
Some stood through
For the red, white and blue
And some had to fall
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties
And recall Some gave all. (unknown writer)

The easiest way for evil to triumph, is for good men to do
nothing....Edmund Burke. There are people who think that we do the
job to be heroes, or for personal gain. They could never understand
that it is about the person next to you.

It is abundantly clear that ALL of your fallen officers shared a
common thread - they were of the highest caliber yet modest and
unassuming in the approach of their duties. I believe that for as long
as such
men and women patrol your streets with such commitment and
professionalism, then you have much to be proud of. My heart goes out
to all the bereaved families, but be assured, there is someone in
"every" corner of the world who cares!
