Police Officer Nels Niemi, 42, was shot multiple times after he responded to a report of a disturbance in the 14700 block of Doolittle Drive about 11 p.m. The suspect 22-year-old Irving Ramirez
of Newark is still at large. Ramirez was not among the group of people that caused the disturbance, which was reported by residents in the area, but he drove up to the scene after officer Niemi arrived.

Niemi and Ramirez engaged in a casual conversation and there was no indication it would turn into a violent assault. But Ramirez then opened fire on Niemi then fled the scene. Niemi joined the Police Department three years ago after previously working in the computer industry.

Niemi is survived by his wife and a 13-year-old son and a 6-year-old daughter.

Ramirez is described as a 23-year-old Hispanic man with black hair and brown eyes.
Police said he is 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs 180 pounds and should be considered armed and dangerous. Officers searched Ramirez' last known residence in Newark earlier today and are working with regional law enforcement agencies to follow leads from numerous sources.

This loss really touched me because it was so close to home. It is my opinion that Dan left the world a little better for for us all. It is because of men and women like you I sleep so soundly at night. Dan was an officer that wasn't concerned about monetary gain, he used his position in the community to touch each and every person he encountered and left a lasting impression on us all.

Your unprovoked death makes us all realize the danger police officers are in each and every day.
