Police Officer Timothy Webster
Crystal Springs Police Department, Mississippi

End of Watch: August 13, 2005

Age:
32
Badge Number:
CS10
Years on The Job:
2 mo.
Cause of Death:
Shot and killed

Crystal Springs police officer Timothy Webster was shot about 10 p.m. Saturday following a traffic stop on the city's south end near South Jackson Street and Kendall Lane. He was pronounced dead at Hardy Wilson Memorial Hospital in Hazlehurst. Christopher Bridges, 19, of Hazlehurst is accused of using Webster's .45-caliber Glock service weapon to shoot the rookie officer once in the left side about an inch above his bullet-resistant vest. Officers started their manhunt for Bridges, who was recently released from Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility, about 11 p.m. Saturday. The hunt continued late Sunday night. Webster, who graduated from the state Law Enforcement Training Academy in June, was hired in February. On Saturday night, Crystal Springs officer Greg Smith stopped a vehicle in which Bridges was one of three passengers. Webster and another officer were with Smith when Bridges ran. Webster chased and caught Bridges. The two struggled, and Bridges somehow got Webster's gun and shot the officer. After the shooting, Webster radioed that he had been hurt. A fellow officer found Webster, and an ambulance rushed him to the hospital.

Bridges had been released from Walnut Grove about a month ago after serving about a year for grand larceny. Officer Webster had served with the Crystal Springs Police Department for two months. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Condolences:
Sorry about Officer Nelsons death, and especially his canine companion. The dog depended on Nelson to transport him safely to the job. Yet, at the time of the accident, Officer Nelson did not have his lights or siren on and was traveling in excess of 70- mph in a 50-mph zone while not wearing his seat belt. What was he thinking?

To Timothy's family, I feel deep sorrow for your loss. Your husband and father was no doubt an idealistic young man who was just born to be a cop. I am so angry that he was taken away from you and from his community. Losing a man like that is all the more devastating because men like him benefit everyone they come in contact with. I reflect, and remember:
All gave some
And some gave all
Some stood through
For the red, white and blue
And some had to fall
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties
And recall Some gave all. (unknown writer)

It is abundantly clear that ALL of your fallen officers shared a common thread - they were of the highest caliber yet modest and unassuming in the approach of their duties. I believe that for as long as such
men and women patrol your streets with such commitment and professionalism, then you have much to be proud of. My heart goes out to all the bereaved families, but be assured, there is someone in "every" corner of the world who cares!
