An Arkansas State Police trooper died from injuries sustained when he was struck by another trooper during a chase in Crittenden County. Trooper Mark W. Carthron, 31, of West Memphis was picking up a spike strip that had been thrown down on Interstate 40 to stop a robbery suspect when he was struck by another trooper's car. Carthron was struck at 6:30 p.m. Sunday and was pronounced dead at a hospital at 12:30 a.m. Monday.

The cruiser that struck Carthron was driven by state police Cpl. Lowry Astin of Forrest City. The robbery suspect's vehicle was stopped by the spike strips. Commander Col. Steve Dozier says Carthron had been with the agency for eight years.

Carthron is survived by his wife, Angela, a brother Thomas Junior of Atlanta, and his parents Thomas and Doris Carthron of Texarkana.
