Sheriff's deputy was killed on Interstate 10 when the wheel of a pickup traveling in the opposite direction flew off and struck the officer's patrol car in what officials are calling a freak accident. Sgt. Ruben Orozco, 51, who was involved in the accident after leaving an assignment at the Sun Bowl, was a 26-year veteran of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
Around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Orozco was driving east on Interstate 10 after completing his assignment at the Sun Bowl. As the officer approached the Trowbridge Drive exit, the wheel and tire of a westbound Ford F250 pickup came off, flew across the median and struck the patrol car on the roof and front door on the driver's side. Orozco's vehicle scraped along the center divider of I-10 for about 1,400 feet before coming to a stop. He was taken to Thomason Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:08 a.m.
The driver of the Ford pickup was a pastor from Arizona traveling through Texas in a caravan of several vehicles. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Orozco had longtime experience as a peace officer, including duty assignments in the patrol division, special operations, internal affairs and criminal investigations. In 2002, Orozco received the Supervisor of the Year award from the Texas Narcotics Officers Association for his work with the Metro Narcotics Task Force. Orozco was also a leader of the hostage negotiation team and was a master peace officer.
Orozco is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Orozco, three children and three grandchildren. Services are pending.
