Colorado Springs police officer
Jared Jensen
was shot and killed Wednesday morning trying to apprehend a fugitive wanted for attempted murder.
At least two shots were fired, but it's not known if both struck the officer. Police believe Jensen was shot and killed at a close range while he was down. Jensen had not fired his weapon or even removed his gun from his holster. witnesses say the officer was shot once, fell down and the suspect walked up to him and shot him again in the head. Jereme Lamberth, also known as Jereme Schwienhardt, was arrested at about
1 p.m., nearly two hours after the shooting. An FBI agent and an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives found the suspect hiding in a
vacant trailer at a KOA campground on the 1200 block of South Nevada Avenue.
The shooting occurred just before 10:45 a.m. near the intersection of Costilla and Hancock, just west of Memorial Park. The officer had radioed in that he had spotted Lamberth, who was a fugitive wanted on
suspicion of attempted first-degree murder. Witnesses say the officer approached the wanted man holding handcuffs. Minutes later, police received three 911 calls from residents reporting a shooting at that location. Chavez said the man down was holding handcuffs in his right hand. When other officers arrived to the scene to assist Jensen, they saw him down on the ground and Lamberth was no where to be seen. Jensen was transported to Memorial Hospital were he was pronounced dead at approximately 12:10 p.m. Officers locked down 10 public schools in the area and the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind searching for Lamberth. Officers also established a large perimeter between Fountain Boulevard and Pikes Peak Avenue and Hancock and Wahsatch avenues -- not allowing anyone in or out of that area.
Dozens of SWAT officers swarmed the area, going yard-to-yard looking for the suspect. A police helicopter hovered over the area, helping in the search for the suspect. Police say Lamberth was wanted for allegedly stabbing his older sister earlier this month. Melanie Schweinhardt, 32, was stabbed 13 times including in the head on Feb. 2 at an apartment at 1650 N. Murray Blvd.
Although more than 75 officers were involved in the manhunt, an FBI agent and an ATF agent who heard on the police radio about the officer down and about the ensuing manhunt, started to help in the search. FBI agent Joe Hunt and ATF agent Mark Wood tracked down fresh footprints in the area and eventually arrested Lamberth, who did not struggle. A weapon was also recovered.

Cop Down by Cole Larson
Receiving A Call
Just before the shot and fall
About a fugitive on the run
No one knew he was bearing a gun
Brave like a mouse against a lion
Courageous, creative, like a courage lover Willing to take a bullet for his town
When he does his family will frown
Taking a bullet going down
The life of one slipping away
Hoping to live another day
Gasping for air to the very last breath
My prayer's all with Officer Jensen's family and fellow officer's. My 13 year old son wrote the poem "Cop Down" about officer Jensen for a class project. I was really touched by it and wanted to share it with his family and fellow officer's.

I was at Detective Jared Jensen funeral. It was one of the hardest things I had to sit through. When I heard the Last Call go my heart dropped and I couldn’t help but cry. It was overwhelming driving down the precession and watching all the citizens of Colorado Springs stop what they were doing and say one last goodbye to a fallen hero. You can now watch down on your family and keep them forever safe.

All those who have served and given their lives are a rare breed. Every day that they report for duty and turn the key and roll out, they know in their hearts it may be the last time. But they go anyway, because that is who they are. To the dear families and Friends my heart goes out to you. There is no doubt that they are still on patrol and still watching over their families and friends from on high. Chaplain Gibson "SEMPER FI" Brothers and Sisters!

It is abundantly clear that ALL of your fallen officers shared a
common thread - they were of the highest caliber yet modest and
unassuming in the approach of their duties. I believe that for as long
as such
men and women patrol your streets with such commitment and
professionalism, then you have much to be proud of. My heart goes out
to all the bereaved families, but be assured, there is someone in
"every" corner of the world who cares!
