Headland Police Department, Alabama
End of Watch:
Friday, April 24, 2009
Age: 38
Years on The Job:
NA
Badge Number:
207
Cause of Death:
Shot and killed

Officer Dexter Hammond has been shot to death and another sheriff's deputy critically injured in a standoff with a suspect in southeast Alabama. The suspect was also killed.  Police say they got a call Friday evening that 53-year-old Fred Davis was firing a gun outside his trailer.  They say he shot Headland Officer Dexter Hammond to death and then fired at deputies arriving at the scene before they shot and killed him.

Henry County Sheriff's Deputy Ted Yost was badly injured and was in critical condition at Southeast Alabama Medical Center late Friday.  Alabama State Troopers spokesman Kevin Cook tells the Dothan Eagle that it's too early to determine a motive or even if there was a motive.

Officer Hammond had previously served as the Police Chief of the Midland City Police Department. He is survived by his wife and son.
