Roberts, a 38-year-old Newfoundland native, was killed after tackling a man who was pushing a cart of suspicious items. According to Tampa police Lt. Brian Dugan, who knew Roberts, the suspect then pulled a gun and shot the officer.  Roberts is being remembered “as an outstanding officer, husband, father and member of the (police) family”, according to the police department.

Roberts began his career with the department in 1998 after serving with the U.S. military. He worked in patrols until 2005 when he became a K-9 officer. He was promoted to corporal in July and was on track to become a detective.

Roberts was honoured with a Life Saving Award in 2005 and was awarded dozens of letters of appreciation from citizens, supervisors and other law enforcement agencies over his 11-year career.
He is survived by his wife and three-year-old son.
