A Polk County Sheriff's Office detention sergeant died Tuesday morning following an altercation with an inmate at the South Polk County Jail in Frostproof.

According to a report from the Sheriff's Office, Sgt. Ronnie Brown died at Winter Haven Hospital after having had surgery for a fractured vertebrae, which he suffered while trying to restrain an out-of-control inmate at the South County Jail on Aug. 30.  The Sheriff's Office is now conducting a homicide investigation into the death of Brown.

Sergeant Brown had served with the Polk County Sheriff's Office for 20 years. He is survived by his wife and daughter. His wife also serves as a detention deputy with the agency.
