Sedgwick County sheriff's deputy
investigating a supposed larceny case was hit and injured by
gunfire at about Noon Monday. The incident happened near a house
in the 3600 block of S. Rock Road, east of McConnell Air Force
Base. The victim was shot once in the torso, and once in the
lower part of his body. Emergency crews on the scene described
the deputy's injuries as a wound to the upper left chest,
placing him in serious-to-critical condition. The victim
initially emerged from surgery reported to be in stable
condition. Sheriff Robert Hinshaw announced later that Deputy
Brian S. Etheridge took a turn for the worse, was taken back
into surgery, and died around 4:20 PM Monday afternoon.
Law enforcement personnel saturated the area, setting up a
one-mile perimeter as the search for the suspect got underway.
The suspect has been identified only as a 27-year-old recent
parolee. Officers spent most of the day surrounding a house
where they believed he was hiding. The suspect was later spotted
in a field near the house and exchanged gunfire with the
officers. The suspect was hit several times, and was pronounced
dead at 6:10 PM.
This was Deputy Etheridge's first law enforcement job. He had
been on the force 14 months. Etheridge graduated from Derby High
School and Wichita State University. A candlelight vigil was
held last night at the Warren Theater in Old Town.
Deputy Etheridge had served with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's
Office for 18 months. He is survived by his wife and daughter. |

Larry Cox, the father, son, husband, uncle, brother, and hero. What else can be said? He was a friend to everyone he met. Even the people he arrested liked him, he managed to befriend them. Larry was my "big brother" not by blood but by friendship. His parents raised him by the word of the Lord and he lived that everyday of his life. Larry is missed by kids as well as adults.

Larry, My daughter and I will forever miss you. Your not too far away in our thoughts. We miss seeing you and smiling. I believe you have left one miracle for me to have. I recently had a baby boy (3-15-06), his name is Nathan Landon John. I made a promise to you, if and when I could have another child, I would make sure he would have Landon as part of his name. His is my miracle child of you. I Miss - Love You!

I loved Officer Larry Cox he was my D.A.R.E officer, he was a best
friend and he was always there to talk to and support you and protect
you. I remember when I was in elementary school and he was at the
school for D.A.R.E and it was Valentine's Day and I gave him a
valentine telling him I dared him to be my valentine. He was such a
sweat guy and he brought a sense of comfort to my life. So officer Cox
I salute you and I love you.

I wish to send my deepest sympathies to the Family of officer Cox and
the department and community that he served for so many years. As long
