Deputy Charlie Brown died after a shootout in the 1700 block of West Main Street. The unidentified suspect also was killed.  Deputy Brown was responding to a call in Williamston about a man who was walking down the street and firing a gun. Williamston is located about 100 miles east of Raleigh off the US 64 bypass.

Brown was a narcotics officer with the Martin County Sheriff's Office.  The suspect was also shot and killed during the incident.
