Reedley Police Officer Javier Bejar had been
on life support at a Fresno hospital since the daylong standoff on Feb. 25
2010 He died Monday morning. Some 200 officers from area
departments converged on the tiny unincorporated town of Minkler after two
Fresno County sheriff's deputies were shot while trying to serve a search
warrant. Deputy Joel
Wahlenmaier, died within hours. The other deputy is recovering form an
eye wound.
Hundreds of rounds were fired between the suspect's mobile home and police
who had cordoned off the area. The alleged shooter, Ricky Liles, 51,
apparently took his own life. Bejar, 28, was named officer of the year
in his agricultural community in 2007.
Officer Javier Bejar died from a gunshot wound sustained four days earlier
when he responded to assist on an officer down call.
Officer Bejar had served with the Reedley Police Department for five years
and had served with the department as an Explorer as a teenager. Officer
Bejar was also a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, having served
with the United States Marine Corps. He is survived by his wife.
