The police officer
Brian Walsh
died Sunday morning while helping secure a
shooting scene. The King County Medical Examiner's Office said Walsh
died of a cardiac arrhythmia.
Walsh was found dead about 6:45 a.m. inside his patrol car near the scene of
a police shooting. He had responded to help cordon off the area.
The incident began when officers were called to check out a suspicious
vehicle parked in the 33300 block of 26th Avenue SW at about 1:15 a.m.
Sunday.
The SUV was backed into a spot with two people asleep in the rear. Police
blocked it in with spike strips after determining that it was a stolen
vehicle. Suddenly the two occupants of the vehicle awoke and jumped
into the front seat, and the driver started the engine.
Officers ordered the two men to get out of the vehicle, but they ignored the
commands. The driver put the SUV in gear and rammed a patrol car, then hit a
second police car and a third. Two Federal Way officers opened fire as
the SUV sped away, hitting the driver in the arm.
The vehicle was quickly found, parked nearby. The driver was found hiding in
the carport of a nearby residence, with a bullet wound to his arm, and was
taken to Harborview Medical Center. The other man ran from the scene
and is still at large.
As police were investigating the incident in the aftermath of the shooting,
Walsh and several other Federal Way officers set up a perimeter around the
crime scene. Walsh was found collapsed in his car and officers and
medics started CPR, but were unable to revive him.
Walsh had been with the Federal Way Police Department for more than four
years, and had four years of police experience before coming to the city.
He was a member of the Air National Guard, beginning in 1994. He is survived
by his wife and two children. Their third child is due in May. |
