U.S. Border Patrol agent was killed and
another critically injured when their vehicle collided with a bull and a
tree.
Agents Mark Van Doren and Adelaido Martinez were travelling west along
Farm-to-Market Road 755 west of Rachal when their patrol sedan collided with
a bovine bull standing in the roadway, Border Patrol officials said in a
statement.
Colliding with the animal caused their vehicle to veer off the road and hit
a tree. The agents were patrolling the area.
A Brooks County justice of the peace pronounced Van Doren, 40, of Michigan,
dead at the scene.
Martinez, 37, of San Juan, was transported via helicopter to Corpus Christi
Memorial Hospital, where he remained in critical condition Monday afternoon.
Agents said he suffered head trauma, several fractures and lacerations.
Neither agent on duty in the 2008 Ford Crown Victoria was wearing a seat
belt, said Department of Public Safety senior operator Ana Mendez. The
posted speed limit on the rural road is 65 mph and the conditions at the
time were dry and clear.
Texas Department of Public Safety troopers continue to investigate the
accident.
Encino is about 55 miles north of McAllen. |
