Trooper Marc Castellano 29, of Howell was struck by a car on Route 195 West in Howell on Sunday as he and other police officers responded to a report of a man with a gun who they were told had disappeared into nearby woods. The trooper later died of his injuries.

The woman who made the report, Diana Hoffman, 30 of Blackwood, has been charged in connections with Castellano's death. Her false alarm brought troopers and officers to the roadway.

Castellano was struck by a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Robert R. Swan, 20, of Jackson. Swan has not been issued any summonses. The investigation is continuing.

The female was arrested and faces multiple charges relating to the death of Trooper Castellano, in that she provided false information that prompted an unnecessary search by officers which led to the death of the trooper.

Trooper Castellano had served with the New Jersey State Police for six years and was assigned to Troop C Tactical Patrol Unit. He is survived by his wife and two children.
