Police Officer Dan De Kraai was accidentally killed by another officer after a special training exercise had concluded.  Patrol Officer Dan De Kraai, a five-year veteran of the department, was shot in the back when another officer was demonstrating something to him.

Additional details, and the identity of the officer who fired the shot, were not disclosed. The officer who fired the shot was placed on administrative leave. The incident occurred at 2:17 p.m. at the old Neely School during Special Response Team training. Live ammunition was not used during the training and the incident occurred while the officers were on break.

Dan De Kraai was shot once in the back. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Several police units were on the scene after the accident and the street around the school was closed off. The former school, located at 1909 S. 12th St., closed after the 2009 academic year and has been used for Special Response Team police training on occasion since then.

He is survived by his wife and young daughter.
