Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Shaun
Lin, 23, who died during a training exercise after falling into the James
River near Newport
near Newport News, Virginia.
He served the Coast Guard for approximately 3 years.
He was attempting to transfer from a 25-foot
small boat to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Frank Drew when he fell from a
ladder into the water near the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel.
His body was recovered the following evening after an intensive search by
the Coast Guard, local police, and rescue dive teams.
Lin, of Staten Island, N.Y. joined the Coast Guard July 17, 2007 and after
boot camp was sent to Coast Guard Station Boston as a Fireman
(09/28/07-06/03/09). In 2009 he was transferred to the Coast Guard Cutter
Maui serving in the North Arabian Gulf (06/03/09-06/23/10) before arriving
at Maritime Safety and Security Team New York.
His awards and accolades include: two Commandant Commendation Medals, Coast
Guard Unit Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation,
Coast Guard Overseas Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi
Campaign Medal, Coast Guard Sea Service Ribbon, Coast Guard Rifle Marksman
Ribbon and a Coast Guard Pistol Marksman Ribbon.
Petty Officer Shaun Lin died during a training exercise in the James River,
Petty Officer Lin had served with the United States Coast Guard for three
years and was assigned to MSST New York. |
