Corrections Officer Casimiro Pomales, 52, was pronounced dead shortly after the 1:35 p.m. crash, according to the New York State Department of Correctional Services.

The two other people in the van — a corrections officer and an inmate — suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Pomales was driving the inmate from Napanoch to a medical appointment in Albany when the van apparently was sideswiped by a car at mile marker 94.3 northbound on the Thruway, about 3 miles north of Exit 19 (Kingston).

“During that transport, the state van was involved in a two-car motor vehicle accident, which resulted in the death of our Eastern Correctional officer. State police said the car, a Mercury Sable, appears to have improperly changed lanes.

State police said in a press release issued on Saturday that the woman who was driving the Sable took her eyes off the road to adjust the heat in the car, causing the vehicle to drift from the passing lane into the driving lane and strike the van.  The impact forced both vehicles off the right side of the road, where the van overturned.

Officer Pomales had served with the New York State Department of Correctional Services for over 22 years and was assigned to the Eastern Correctional Facility. He is survived by his wife and several grown children.
