Larry started off his career in law enforcement in 1994 with a local
city police department in Michigan as a reserve police officer. Larry
left the reserve position and currently works with a 400+ member staff
Sheriffs department in Michigan and currently works as a Marine MSO
with the Sheriff's marine division. Larry
has trained
in Yoshinkai Aikido,
a certified PPCT/DT
defensive tactics instructor, certified AED technician, (S.H.A.R.P)
certified: Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention PPCT Instructor.
Larry has
taught at different departments in Michigan and is on staff at two
local police academies and Colleges.

(affectionately known as “Little Joe”) began his teaching career in
1974 teaching martial arts to civilians. His
law enforcement career began in 1977 as a Protection Officer
with the Federal Reserve Bank in Detroit, Michigan. He has
since served in the following capacities:
Deputy Sheriff: Corrections Division of the Oakland County
Sheriff’s Department (6 Years)
Police Officer:
Municipal police agency bordering Detroit. Currently on shift
patrol as a member of this
160 officer
department (since 1985). He has experience as:
Patrol Officer, FTO, Directed Patrol Unit Member, Department
Training Officer, SERT Team, Leader/Operator, Detective
(Narcotics/Vice/Surveillance), Background Investigator, Lead
Instructor in Subject Control and Use of Force Training
(including firearms) Researcher with the Training Unit developing
officer training and evaluating equipment
Certified Instructor
in several
use of force disciplines from verbal skills to firearms. Staff
Instructor: Oakland County Community College Police Academy and
Reserve Academy in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Technical Consultant/On
Air Talent: Law Enforcement Training Network and Caliber Press,
the Professional Security Training Network as well as the Police Corp.
Subject Matter Expert/Instructor Trainer for the Michigan
Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (M.C.O.L.E.S.) and member of
commission’s team that was tasked to rework the State’s police academy
standards for Defensive Tactics. Presenter: ASLET, IALEFI, PPCT,
and the Advanced Law Enforcement Training Camp in Provo Utah.
National and International Instructor: United States, Canada and
Puerto Rico, training local, state, and federal law enforcement
personnel in various aspects of Use of Force and Subject
Control. Traveled to Tokyo Japan (1989) with a group of
Defensive Tactics Instructors from the United States, and trained in
various locations in the Metropolitan
Tokyo area with Japanese law enforcement agencies.
Expert Witness:
Currently serving as
court approved witness for departments/municipalities involved
in
litigation regarding use of force cases (Officer Ferrera may be

Tom Scurlock,

Tom spent 6 years in the Marine Corps during Vietnam followed by 20
years in the Naval Reserve where he retired as Chief of Security.
Presently Tom is an active reserve police officer with one of the
Detroit Metropolitan areas larger police departments.
Tom has trained in Yoshinkai Aikido and is a certified PPCT
Defensive Tactics Instructor for over 10 years. Tom has taught
at many of the police and sheriff departments in Michigan and is on
staff at two of the local police academies.
besides defensive tactics Tom is also a certified instructor for
Sexual Harassment Assault Rape Prevention (SHARP), Violent Patient
Management (VPM), and Dynamic Simulation.

Larry Jackson

Lawrence (Larry) Jackson has spent the greater part of his career
teaching difficult subjects to difficult audiences. Whether it
was teaching new police recruits, or seasoned law enforcement
veterans, Larry has been called upon to deal with issues and topics
that most of us would choose not to acknowledge; survival in life and
death situations.
Over
the last 20 years, Larry has taught such topics as Arrest and Control
Tactics, Violent Patient Management, Firearms, and Sexual Assault
Prevention programs. His enthusiastic and high energy
presentation style complements the serious material of his basic and
instructor programs in PPCT Defensive Tactics, Violent Patient
Management, and Women’s Self Defense,
In
addition to being a law enforcement use of force instructor, Larry
works extensively with security and non law enforcement personnel to
bring them safety strategies and skills.
His newest training program has met with
enthusiastic reviews. Specially designed for human service
workers who must go into homes and residences, the

program teaches students to recognize environmental, verbal, and
physical signs of impending physical violence. The program
teaches participants simple and effective techniques to de-escalate or
deal with the violence before it gets to a critical point.
A 23
year police veteran, Larry holds a black belt in Aikido and Masters
degree from Michigan State University. Larry also holds the
title of Certified Protection Professional (CPP) awarded to him by the
American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) the international
professional security organization as well as being a Certified Law
Enforcement Trainer(CLET). He is currently a full-time Faculty member
with responsibility for teaching law enforcement skills at a community
college in Michigan

Steve Glynn,

Over 12 years ago Steve got his passion for training when he started
his career as a police cadet and assistant to the training officer of
a state universities police department. Since then Steve has
served in many capacities, both in the public and private sectors.
Including serving on a Metro Detroit Police Department, and working in
retail, medical, - corporate security settings.
Steve specializes in training in the private sector, brining with him
a vast knowledge of private sector security and the many dynamics
training, especially use of force training brings. Steve has
consulted several corporations on their training programs - policies
concerning training and use of force.
Recently, Steve served as a Shift Sergeant and Use of Force instructor
for a major health care provider’s Private Police Department,
certified under Michigan P.A. 330. Currently Steve is the
Operations Supervisor - Training Coordinator for a national insurance
provider’s Corporate Security Department. For the last several
years Steve has taught First Aid, CPR - AED at a local community
college. Steve is also on staff at a local police academy
teaching at the regular and reserve officer academies.
Steve
is an instructor in the following disciplines: Pressure Point
Controls, Defensive Tactics, Spontaneous Knife Defense, Handcuffing,
Handgun Retention, Baton techniques, Subject Control, Sexual
Harassment Assault and Rape Prevention (SHARP), Chemical Aerosol Spray
Restraint, Weapon Disarming, Shotgun, First Aid, CPR - AED.
Steve
is currently a member of American Society for Industrial Security
International, American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers,
International Law Enforcement Educator’s and Trainer’s Association,
International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors, The
American Women’s Self Defense Association, Crime Prevention
Association of Michigan, and The Metro Detroit Police Emerald
Society.
